  • Goethe'nin, on altıncı yüzyılın ilk yarısında yaşamış George Faust isimli magusun etrafında şekillenen fakat aynı zamanda demonlarla sözleşme akdetme, simya yoluyla unsurları dönüştürme gibi antik motiflerle de beslenen bir Alman halk efsanesine dayalı Faust tragedyasına 1773 yılından itibaren çalışmaya başladığını birtakım belgelere dayanarak söyleyebiliyoruz.İlk fragmanlar ise 1790 ilkbaharında neşredilmiştir. Yıllar boyunca sahne sahne çalışılan eserin ilk kısmı, bugün de muhafaza edilen düzeniye, 1808 yılında Goethe Külliyatı'nın sekizinci cildi olarak Tıibingen'de J.G. Cotta tarafından basılmıştır.
