- In his Nature Research, which he wrote about two thousand years ago, Seneca explained his purpose and limits before questioning nature as follows: There are also those who think that they have a mind that can predict and manage events related to both themselves and others. They think that this universe, in which we are present, is purposeless and that nature moves by chance or without being aware of what it does. What value do you place on learning all this and attributing boundaries to objects? For example, how powerful is God? Did he first create matter himself, or did he use an already existing substance? Did design come before matter or did matter come before design? Can God create anything he wants, or can the matter he processes in many of his creations mislead him, like an artist who uses a substance that is difficult to process, even if there is no defect in his work? Why shouldn't researching, learning and concentrating on all this mean transcending the boundaries of mortality and writing a better destiny? Are you asking what good all this will do for you? In this way, if nothing else, at least I will know that everything is limited to the extent of God. Perhaps that is why Seneca not only classified and interpreted natural events in his Natural Studies, which deserves the title of classical; In doing so, unlike Aristotle or other Greek naturalists, he also touched upon the problems of his time. He criticized valid understandings of prophecy and superstitions. For example, he said that Zeus could not shoot a lightning arrow because lightning was a natural phenomenon. In his work, which is the second main source in ancient times about the eruption of Vesuvius, he not only conveyed different views on the natural causes of the earthquake, but also criticized the unfoundedness of the fear of earthquakes according to Stoic philosophy and even offered his consolation against this fear. He did not separate nature from humans and shared his social criticism and suggestions with his readers, who almost still suffer from the same troubles two thousand years after him. C.
