However, the charming middle-aged Agnes Bain believes she deserves more; Owning a detached house is like buying what you want... However, Agnes, who is constantly cheated on by her taxi driver husband, is doomed to live in a ruined mining town with her three children. Although her children do their best to save Agnes, who is slowly getting stuck in alcohol, after a while they leave her one by one to save themselves. Only the youngest, Shuggie, stays with his mother in the hope that one day she will recover. Shuggie, a different child, adopts his mother's assertive attitude. However, while his miner children beat him up for his behavior, he is also brutally tried by adults. Trying to be like other boys, Shuggie also tries to save his mother and get her out of this corrupt environment. Douglas Stuart's novel Shuggie Bain is a work of extraordinary strikingness and beauty, despite its unreserved attitude, revealing poverty, the limits of love and the futility of arrogance.
