- MEMORIES OF A SOLDIER FROM THE HITLER'S ELITE GUARD CORPSLike many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann was attracted to the Zeitgeist fueled by the Nazis. Convinced that he was growing up in the best country in the world, Bartmann dreamed of joining Hitler's elite Waffen-SS unit, the Leibstandarte. Tall, blonde, blue-eyed and only 17 years old, Erwin's dream came true on May 1, 1941, when he left the Glaser bakery on Memeler Strasse, where he worked as an apprentice, and voluntarily stepped into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin.Arriving on the Soviet Front in late summer 1941, Erwin was assigned to a forward communications squad of the 4th Company and soon discovered that survival depended on luck or the protection of a guardian angel. His good luck ended on July 11, 1943, when a piece of shrapnel lodged in his lung during the epic Battle of Kursk-Prohorovka. After a period of convalescence and his promotion to Unterscharführer, that is, petty officer, he was assigned as a machine gun trainer in the Training and Supply Battalion, located near the eastern part of the Berliner Ring Highway. When the Red Army's major offensive against the Seelow Heights began, Erwin's unit, now combined with the Regiment Regiment, was sent to the southern flank of the Berlin-Frankfurt Highway near the Oder River. With German defenses soon collapsing and the end of Hitler's Germany becoming inevitable, Erwin would have to choose between fighting for survival and fulfilling the SS's oath of loyalty to death. This sincere memoir, which extends from the life of an ordinary child growing up in Hitler's Germany to the terrible war on the Soviet front and Berlin turned into rubble with bombs, without being overwhelmed by politics and military strategies; It tells the true stories of soldiers among the snow, mud and falling bullets with the fluency of a novel. For the Homeland and the Führer, it offers a unique and sometimes surprising perspective for those who want to see and read World War II through the eyes of losers, not winners. Show more
