The sharpener is susceptible to gumming and thus requires a #2 school pencil to clean and sharpen the blade. The set of two sharpeners are manually powered and work quietly, providing a very sharp point suitable for colored pencils. It can be used to sharpen charcoal pencils; however, it requires extra care when sharpening softer pencils. The hole is of a standard round size and thus cannot sharpen triangle-shaped colored pencils.
