Anthem is a short novel written by Ayn Rand, which tells the story of a man, Equality 7-2521, who grows up being punished for thinking for himself. The concepts of "I" and self are forbidden in this society where collectivism prevails. The book's underlying theme is that the collective mind lives in darkness and ignorance, and it is the individual that discovers and creates. The story is a wake-up call for anyone who wishes to remain free from slavery. Although written in the 1930s, the book speaks to our current society's slow migration towards collectivism. Anthem is a tour-de-force against collectivism in all its forms, placing one man at the centre of his own life and teaching him to value himself. The use of metaphor and imagery is great, and the Prose is engaging and absorbing. The novel is well-paced, and every sentence advances the story or the ideas within it. It is a thoroughly absorbing and entertaining way to spend an afternoon and yet will leave you thinking for many years.
