The plot follows Captain Mike's tugboat, the 'Jenny,' as he leads a rescue/salvage crew, including Sally Field as a miscast character, Karl Malden as the old first mate, and Michael Caine as the protagonist. The film also features Telly Savalas as Dr. Stefano Sveno, a one-dimensional villain seeking to retrieve a supply of plutonium and bomb parts from the capsized Poseidon ship. There are many other characters, including survivors and crew members of the Poseidon ship. The film is described as a decent action disaster movie, but there are some problems with it. Irwin Allen rewrote Paul Gallico's script, making changes that went against the original.
