Product Details
- Çulluk, Mahmut Yesari's most famous novel, was serialized in Milliyet newspaper in 1927 and then compiled into a book in 1928. Mahmut Yesari worked at Cibali Tobacco Factory for a week to write about Çulluk and witnessed the unhealthy working environments and poor living conditions of tobacco workers. In the first part of the novel, the experiences of Murat, who comes to Istanbul from his village and starts working in a tobacco factory, are told. In addition to the problems of the working class, many colorful issues such as Murat's indecisive love story with his colleague Münevver, the social life of Istanbul with its ethnic and cultural diversity, and the promiscuous lives in Beyoğlu taverns are also touched upon. In the second part, conflicts such as Murat's inability to adapt to the village life he had to return to, the obstacles to his reunion with Esma, whom he fell in love with before going to Istanbul, tobacco smugglers, and the city-village difference are handled with a realistic approach. Çulluk, which is considered the first workers' novel in Turkish literature, is a work that stands out with its treatment of the reflections of modernization from village to city in the first years of the Republic, social injustice, the harsh working conditions, and human relations on the axis of men and women.
